Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR) and Extended Reality (XR) - An Introduction

Image
The way we work, play, and socialize is changing dramatically. More people than ever are working remotely, and screens have become the leading platform for learning and gaming. And this evolution has paved way to the metaverse — today, popular technologies like AR, VR, MR and XR seamlessly unleash you into an immersive world where you can shop, create and play games, collaborate with colleagues, explore, and more. 20 years ago, the idea of experiencing digital content as if it were part of our real environment seemed like science fiction. For a long time VR hardware was expensive, complicated and totally unintuitive. Today, AR, VR, MR and XR technologies look completely different – 360-degree videos on YouTube, AR filters on Snapchat and homemade VR devices like the Google Cardboard are changing our experience of immersive experiences. Especially in times of social distancing, of travel restrictions and limitations, augmented reality can replace a real “prevented reality”. Let us t...

What is IOT (Internet of Things)?

The Internet of Things (IoT) describes the network of physical objects - "things” - that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the internet. Metaverse: Facebook's new avatar - Part 2

Image
In part 1 of the article , we introduced the metaverse and provided a definition of what it consists of and how it works. Let us look at Facebook’s vision of metaverse and who are the other players in the market. Facebook's vision of metaverse? The tech giant formerly known as Facebook has already made significant investments in virtual reality, including the 2014 acquisition of Oculus. Meta envisions a virtual world where digital avatars connect through work, travel or entertainment using VR headsets. Zuckerberg has been bullish on the metaverse, believing it could replace the internet as we know it. As per per news release from Facebook aka Meta, the metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world. It’...

Metaverse: Facebook's new avatar - Part 1

Image
Recently Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced Meta, which brings together their apps and technologies under one new company brand. Facebook will still continue to be known as Facebook but the governing company will be titled as Meta. Meta’s focus will be to bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities and grow businesses. But what is metaverse? Author Neal Stephenson is credited with coining the term "metaverse" in his 1992 science fiction novel "Snow Crash," in which he envisioned lifelike avatars who met in realistic 3D buildings and other virtual reality environments. Since then, various developments have made mileposts on the way toward a real metaverse, an online virtual world which incorporates augmented reality, virtual reality, 3D holographic avatars, video and other means of communication. As the metaverse expands, it will offer a hyper-real alternative world for you to coexist in. Inklings of t...
